About The Local Area

Eyemouth has a population of 5,000 and is a vibrant fishing town with a charming working harbour. The town is popular with visitors exploring the beautiful coastal area, including St Abbs, Gunsgreen House (the smuggler’s house), the Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve and the local seals basking at the town’s harbour.

Eyemouth is one of the Harbours included in strategic investment modelling in line with Scottish Government’s ambition to grow port capacity on Scotland’s east coast that serves not only the offshore wind sector but delivers a wider economic benefit for Scotland’s coastal communities, regions and nationally.

Master planning and development work is currently being carried out around the town’s harbour to identify development opportunities, including offshore energy, and ensure that it continues to be Eyemouth’s key socio-economic enabler.

Eyemouth is the final stop of Kirkpatrick C2C, South of Scotland’s Coast to Coast cycle route, a new 250 miles long on-road route that takes visitors across the South of Scotland region, touring local towns and highlighting many points of cultural, historical and natural significance.

Eyemouth is 9 miles from the nearest major railway station at Berwick-Upon-Tweed in Northeast England with its population of 11,670. A new railway station in the village of Reston (5 miles distant) opened in 2022 which also serves Edinburgh and North East England.
